Charl Marais is 32 years old and began fishing at the age of 7. He started competitive angling at the age of 15 in the Boland League. He achieved junior colours at the age of 16 and senior colours at the age of 19.

In 1996 he was the youngest angler to achieve Springbok colours. He guided the Springbok juniors at Struisbaai in 2002 and 2005.In 2004 he started fishing for Western Province and was selected for the Springbok team again in 2007.

He recently returned from the World Police and Fire Games held in Australia where he achieved 3rd place individually and 2nd in the team event. This shows his ability to fish in unknown territory and still excel.

Mossel Bay has produced Charls’ biggest edibles namely a 37kg Cob and 14.6kg Musselcracker. In 2002 he caught a 134kg Ragged tooth shark at Struisbaai and in 2006 he landed a 152kg Bronze Whaler at Eerste Baai in False Bay, Cape Town.
